AIAG at SOTERIA Open Day

AIAG participated in the SOTERIA Open Day on 28 January 2026 in Brussels. Our AIAG Secretary General, Thomas Gehrke, took part in the panel discussion on "Climate Insurance for Farmers: Advancing Shared Resilience in Agriculture." Our aim was to bring together the perspectives of agricultural insurers, reinsurers, and farmers, and to emphasize the need for efficient and practical risk management solutions.

Our Key Insights from the day:

  • Affordability remains the main barrier to adoption, highlighting the need for public-private partnerships, risk-reduction incentives, and increased risk awareness.
  • Data quality, basis risk, technology, and regulatory clarity are critical bottlenecks for scaling parametric solutions.
  • Risk-reduction measures are quantifiable and can be integrated into pricing and triggers to reward resilience.
  • Innovation thrives on collaboration - farmers, insurers, and the state must work together, going beyond pricing mechanisms.
  • Sustainability is essential for resilience, helping to reduce payout volatility, minimize basis risk, and enhance business value.
  • Clear role differentiation drives efficiency: reinsurers focus on risk management and product design, while local insurers handle distribution and farmer relationships.

Overall Takeaway:
Parametric crop insurance has the potential to be a scalable, credible, and adaptive solution - especially when combined with state support, resilience incentives, technological investment, and active farmer engagement. In this context, AIAG plays a pivotal role in connecting stakeholders worldwide, facilitating the exchange of practical insights and experiences among direct insurers, reinsurers, and service providers.
