The ALASA Congress in Mendoza, Argentina, was held between 9 and 12 March 2020 with a main theme of «New challenges in agricultural insurance: diverse and disruptive technologies.»
The importance of efficient agricultural insurance was made clear in exciting presentations on the effects of climate change on the stability of agricultural business and the development of entire regions where droughts have destroyed many agricultural livelihoods in the last few years. Different finance solutions, from private-public partnership models to tariffs and loss adjustment, demonstrated the diverse spectrum of agricultural insurance.
As a representative of AIAG, board member Rainer Langner from Vereinigte Hagelversicherung was able to give those attending an insight into AIAG’s work, particularly into current developments in agricultural risk management in Europe.
The many interesting discussions following the presentations showed just how much interest there is in the themes covered. It is clear that climate change, the increasing incidence of extreme weather events and globalisation pose very particular challenges to risk management in agriculture. Insurance providers are faced with major challenges. However, the variety of solutions presented – across a wide range of scenarios – also show that there are very sound and demonstrable answers.
